As an entry level position, our Floorhands work on the rig floor handling the difficult and physically strenuous operations.

Our worksites showcase our best in class safety standards and our Floorhands embrace our safety culture. They are our all-around workers, responsible for assisting and learning from all other crew members in their duties, including the maintenance and repair of rig equipment.

Our Floorhands show a willingness to get involved, take on the hard tasks and learn from their crews.

Our Lead Floorhands/Motorhands ensure our rigs and equipment are operating as they should. They maintain our engines, perform routine preventative maintenance and minor rig repairs. They keep our equipment clean and ready to go. Our Lead Floorhands/Motorhands are planners, embrace our safety culture and are always ready to learn more.

Our Derrickhands work above the rig floor and ensuring our operations are running smoothly from the bottom to the top of the derrick.

Derrickhands lift and sink casing, drill pipe and drill collars. They guide the stands of the drill pipe into the fingers at the top of the derrick. Derrickhands also ensure our mud pumps and mud processing equipment are running well.

Our Derrickhands are agile, adapt quickly and tackle the work with tenacity.

What qualifications or skills are required for an oilfield job?

 
  • Must be over 18 years old
  • Must be a Canadian citizen/permanent resident or have an open work visa
  • Minimum Class 5 driver’s license or equivalent
  • Driver’s abstract with less than 6 demerits
  • Required Certifications:
    • H2S Alive
    • Standard First Aid
    • Common Safety Orientation
  • Complete our in-house orientation including WHMIS and TDG
  • Be prepared to work on a rotating shift schedule that operates 24 hours a day
  • Be well-coordinated
  • Be able to work safely, and quickly, and think ahead to next procedure
  • Be in good physical condition
  • Enjoy working as a team member
  • Understand that some operations involve work in remote locations involving camps
  • Applicants will be required to pass a physical capacity test and drug test
  • Good communication skills

How can I stand out as a candidate?

 

Ensign will be particularly interested in those applicants who have:

  • An unrestricted vehicle driver’s license
  • Drilling or similar oilfield experience
  • A background in heavy manual labour jobs
  • A trades background
  • Experience working in a team environment
  • A high level of motivation
  • A strong work ethic

*Offers of employment may be made upon confirmation that the applicant has the physical capacity to perform the job. This is done by completing a medical and a functional capacity test conducted by a medical facility nominated by Ensign, and the cost is borne by Ensign.

Are oilfield jobs hard?

Oilfield jobs can be very physically demanding and challenging, especially for those who are new to the industry. Expect to be outside in all-weather elements, working long hours, while being away from home.
