Air Drilling Techniques

"Air Drilling" refers to the use of air as the circulating medium. The primary purpose for using an air drilling method is to reduce the hydrostatic pressure exerted on the rock matrix, thereby reducing the internal stresses on the matrix and subsequently increasing the penetration rate.

EDS, with one of the largest air fleets in the North American drilling sector, has the unique ability to supply the same new air generation systems used for underbalanced drilling to the percussion drilling sector. The same highly qualified personnel and corporate philosophy results in all the same benefits to you, the customer!

The successful drilling of a well depends on the appropriate selection of the drilling fluid. In certain applications, the use of a conventional mud system may result in loss of circulation, formation damage, and high mud costs. Air drilling techniques lower the downhole fluid pressure to lessen the development of these familiar problems.

Air hammers apply high frequency, high energy loads to the hardrock formation.A rotary motion allows the bit to access new unfractured rock. This combination of rotation, frequency and energy generates the drilling efficiency capable only with air percussion drilling.

Advantages

  • Faster rates of penetration (especially in harder formations)
  • Improved bit performance (more footage per bit)
  • Detection of low pressure zones
  • Effective pressure control through loss circulation zones
  • Lower mud material costs
  • Fast return of uncontaminated cuttings for geological evaluation
  • Minimized formation damage
  • Improvements in deviation control
  • Operating conditions are cleaner
  • Overall costs for drilling operations are lower
